Inmarsat standards

 

Standards used at sea

 

Inmarsat C

Inmarsat C - Inmarsat standard, commissioned in 1991. Provides low-speed, two-way communication based on Store-and-Forward.

Inmarsat C, Mini C satellite terminals are compact and can be installed on almost any ship, they allow packet data transmission at a speed of 600 bps and provide the following capabilities:

  • messaging (ship to ship),
  • sending messages to e-mail (ship-shore, shore-ship),
  • sending SMS messages to GSM mobile phones,
  • sending messages to the PSDN mailbox,
  • faxing (ship-shore),
  • sending an extended group call to Inmarsat-C terminals,
  • transmission of telex messages,
  • sending geographical coordinates, course, speed (Data reporting),
  • sending and receiving distress signals (Distress).

To ensure navigation safety, Inmarsat-C and Mini-C terminals are equipped with an integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, which provides automatic location of the terminal and reporting, in case a distress signal is activated. The reports transmitted contain data on the vessel geographical coordinates, course and speed.

Inmarsat FleetBroadband (FBB)

FBB is a broadband satellite communication standard.

The standard is approved for use in the GMDSS and provides the following capabilities:

  • data transmission on IP networks at speeds up to 432 kbps
  • telephone (up to 9 channels) and fax
  • ISDN
  • dending/receiving SMS messages
  • data transmission with guaranteed speeds up to 256 kbps
  • emergency communication at 505.

Inmarsat FleetOne

FleetOne this is an alternative or addition to Inmarsat FBB standard.

Inmarsat FleetOne standard is approved for use in GMDSS and provides the following capabilities:

  • single-channel voice communication
  • sending/receiving SMS messages
  • data transmission at speeds up to 100 kbps
  • emergency communication at 505

Inmarsat Global Xpress

GX is a Ka-band broadband satellite network. GX network allows data exchange at speeds of up to 50 Mbps per reception and up to 5 Mbps per transmission.

Fleet Xpress

Fleet Xpress (FX) terminal, which is a GX Ka-band terminal which is a back up for FleetBroadband (FB) terminal using the L-band, is used for installation on sea/river vessels. This gives a unique combination of high speed available in Ka-band with the unmatched reliability of a well-recognized communication service in L-band based on the 4th generation of Inmarsat (I4) satellites.

Inmarsat BGAN

Inmarsat BGAN is a broadband satellite network.

The network provides the following capabilities:

  • data transmission in IP networks at speeds up to 492 kbps
  • high-quality telephone and facsimile communication
  • ISDN
  • sending/receiving SMS messages
  • data transmission with guaranteed speeds up to 384 kbps and up to 650 kbps in HDR mode

Inmarsat BGAN operates through 4th generation Inmarsat satellites and satellite gateways owned by Inmarsat. The network provides global coverage (with the exception of the polar regions).

The main features of the BGAN broadband network are:

  • portability and mobility of  users’ satellite terminals;
  • possibility of simultaneous operation in several modes (for example, Internet and telephone conversations);
  • global coverage. The range includes about 85% of land in Europe, Asia and Africa, South and North America, Australia (about 98% of the world's population);
  • support for VPN technology (virtual private networks).

Inmarsat Isat M2M

Isat M2M is the Inmarsat satellite communication standard developed for storing and forwarding text messages at low speeds for tracking, monitoring and controlling assets and operations. IsatM2M supports critical applications such as vehicle safety, industrial equipment monitoring, ship tracking, providing companies with control over fixed or mobile assets. 10.5 or 25.5 bytes for sending and 100 bytes for receiving, with a delay of 30 to 60 seconds.

Inmarsat IsatData Pro

IsatData Pro is a global satellite data transmission system designed for the two-way exchange of text messages and data with assets located anywhere in the world. With IsatData Pro, you can send a message of 100 bytes in less than 15 seconds or send a message of 1 KB in about 45 seconds. The maximum packet size sent to a remote device is 10,000 bytes and sent back to 6,400 bytes.

Secure all-weather data terminals Orbcomm and Honeywell, equipped with a built-in GPS receiver, as well as digital and analog ports for connecting sensors, are used to ensure data exchange. The system is very popular in the marine market, with its help ships can transmit information about the fuel level, engine temperatures, as well as about the speed of movement.

Inmarsat representatives noted that due to the increased volume of packets sent/received, IsatData Pro works with greater efficiency than other existing systems. IsatData Pro provides worldwide connectivity, with the exception of the North and South Pole regions.

Inmarsat BGAN M2M

BGAN M2M - Inmarsat satellite communication standard, allows you to send data using the standard IP protocol at a speed of up to 448 kbps and a delay of about 800 ms. Access to the BGAN M2M network is via compact terminals, which can be placed in a strong waterproof housing for long-term work without human involvement.

Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro is a standard of personal satellite communication in Inmarsat mobile satellite communication system.

Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro standard is available through the 4th generation Inmarsat geostationary satellites and satellite interfaces owned by Inmarsat.

Personal satellite network services:

  • Telephone communication;
  • Voice mail;
  • Transmission of text and E-mail messages;
  • Determination of location coordinates.

Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro and IsatPhone2 mobile satellite services are not provided in the Russian Federation

Standards used for aviation

 

Classic services Inmarsat Aero:

Aero H

Inmarsat Aero H standard operates in the global beam of Inmarsat satellites and provides packet data transmission at speeds up to 10.5 kbps for ACARS, FANS, ATN and up to 9.6 kbps per channel for voice mail, fax and data.

Aero H +

Inmarsat Aero H + standard provides similar capabilities to the Aero H, but uses Inmarsat satellite zonal ray technology and 4.8 kbps codecs for voice communications. In the global beam, Aero H + terminals operate in the same way as standard Aero H systems.

 

Inmarsat SwiftBroadband (SBB)

This is the broadband satellite standard for airplanes. The standard is IP-based and provides the following capabilities:

  • symmetric connection with speeds up to 432 kbps per channel
  • voice communication
  • data transmission with guaranteed speeds up to 384 kbps and up to 650 kbps in HDR mode.

Inmarsat GlobalXpress (GX)

GX is a Ka-band broadband satellite network. GX network allows data exchange at speeds of up to 50 Mbps per reception and up to 5 Mbps per transmission.

For aviation, Ka-band antenna systems have been developed with the ability to be installed either on the fuselage or in the tail unit of the aircraft. Today, GX aviation service is in demand in commercial and business aviation, aboard state aircraft around the world. GX terrestrial terminals are easy to use and deploy, comparable to L-band BGAN terminals.
